President's Message
What’s going on?
When will it start? Why can’t it happen? What’s the delay?
As we round out yet another period of business in Gosford I find myself saying the same things more often: What’s going on? When will it start? Why can’t it happen? What’s the delay?
Of course we have had changes in the city but not to the extent that we have all been hoping for. The Landing at Gosford is a classic example of the position I take in this. I find myself scratching my head trying to work out just what is happening. It was fantastic to finally see Minister Hazzard come out of hiding with a media release in support of getting stage 1 of the Landing back to concept. This is great and my initial reaction was certainly one that made me say “finally”. But then on reading the release over and over I then couldn’t help the image I developed in my mind of “smoke and mirrors”. The minister has only given support to the concept and not to funding, progressing or delivering a suitable outcome to the city of Gosford. Again everyone is being quiet and not saying too much. I just hope that the efforts of so many people locally are being considered by the state government. The people who have been involved in the project to date from planning, design and feedback need to be ready to go through this again it seems, and the project is still a long way of any sort of commencement. This is all because a small minority has put out their views and of course, everybody listens. The reason I highlight this is to say, just for once, what about the majority. There are more people who want the Landing to proceed than those who don’t. The trouble is, most are considered the “silent majority” as they don’t speak up until it’s too late. John Singleton, a local businessmen and well known entrepreneur has taken the proactive step of self funding a campaign that promotes the Landing and is asking people to go to the website they nominate and sign an on line petition. This is needed. As pro landing, pro development and pro city improvement people, we need to all consider going in and signing this online petition. We also need to urge others to do so well. Let the government see we have the numbers in support and that they are only getting a small view of what should be a much bigger picture. ¬On the positive, Gosford City Council has moved on the Regional Library site for Mann Street Gosford. This is a great commitment to the city. The council now have the box seat on development. They can launch this as one of the catalyst projects to kick start the city. Get the first set of “cranes in the sky” that everyone so commonly talks about. What a better way to instil confidence in the city and its future investment from the local level than to create the much awaited Regional Centre. The plan to have a complex that houses the Regional Library, Office space, parking and university facilities, and other ancillary operations could be one which if done well, starts as the new showcase in building standards for the city. We need to continue to support council and encourage them to get the design process completed as quickly as possible so that work can start in 2012 and not be another delayed project. In short, this month I say, build a waterfront that we can all be proud of. Give us the starting point of a rebirth that will ensure that Gosford is more than a regional capital city than just by name. Return our sense of purpose and value. We expect nothing less.
Kind regards and business success,....Rod Dever
